The Real Benefits of Early Orthodontic Treatment
Why We Sometimes Recommend A First Look Around Age Seven
Author: Dr. Felix Gen
One of the most common surprises we hear from parents is how orthodontics can begin much earlier than they expected. Many people picture braces as a middle school rite of passage, so it catches them off-guard when a dentist or an orthodontist suggests a consultation for their seven- or eight-year-old. We understand the hesitation, and we want to explain why early treatment, often called Phase 1 treatment, can make such a difference.
Why Kids Should Get Their First Orthodontic Consultation Around Age 7
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic check by age seven. You don’t need a referral from your child’s dentist to schedule this first visit. Parents are always welcome to contact us directly for an evaluation!
Around age seven, a child’s mouth has a mix of baby teeth and adult teeth, and the jaws are still growing. This combination is exactly what makes this age so valuable. We can see how things are developing before they fully set in, which means we can guide growth rather than work against it later. Think of it like tending a young tree; gentle direction early on is far easier and far gentler than trying to reshape a fully grown trunk.
What Parents Should Know About Early Orthodontic Treatment
Early treatment is not about putting full braces on every young child. When we address certain things early, such as a narrow arch, a crossbite, or jaws that aren’t growing in balance, we can create space and set up the mouth so that the comprehensive treatment later in the teen years is shorter, simpler, and sometimes avoided altogether. We’re not adding a phase for the sake of it. We’re using a window that closes as a child grows.
We also want to be honest about the other side of this. Not every seven-year-old needs treatment. Many of them simply need a watchful eye every few months and a revisit in a year or two. A good early consultation should be just as willing to tell you nothing is needed yet as it is to recommend action. That’s the kind of consultation we offer. Our goal is the right care at the right time, not treatment for its own sake.
