What Is an Orthodontic Emergency?

An orthodontic emergency is any issue with braces, aligners, or orthodontic appliances that causes discomfort, irritation, or interferes with your treatment progress. While these situations are rarely dangerous, they can be uncomfortable and should be addressed by an orthodontic professional to prevent further issues.

Common Orthodontic Emergencies & What To Do

Even with proper care, orthodontic appliances can sometimes shift, loosen, or cause unexpected discomfort. At Success Orthodontics, we are equipped to handle a wide range of appliance-related issues quickly and comfortably.

Broken Brackets

A loose or broken bracket is rarely urgent. If it isn’t painful, it can often wait until your next visit. If it’s moving or irritating your cheek, cover it with orthodontic wax and call us so we can arrange a quick repair.

Poking or Loose Wires

Shifting wires can rub your cheeks or gums. Place orthodontic wax over the sharp end for comfort. If you’ve been instructed before on how, you may carefully tuck the wire with a clean pencil eraser. Call us for advice or a short in‑office fix.

Soreness After Adjustments

Mild tenderness after getting braces or having an adjustment is normal for 24–72 hours. A salt‑water rinse and over‑the‑counter pain relievers can help. Stick to soft foods and let us know if discomfort lasts longer.

Aligner Problems (Lost, Cracked, or Not Fitting)

If you aligner cracks, stop wearing it and save it. If an aligner tray is lost or warped, keep your previous set and call us. We’ll advise you on whether to move forward in your treatment, step back to a previous set, or replace the aligner.

Lost or Broken Retainers

Orthodontic retainers keep results stable. If yours breaks or goes missing, call promptly so we can prevent unwanted tooth movement and plan a replacement.

When To Go to the Emergency Room During an Orthodontic Emergency

Orthodontic emergencies usually do not require a visit to the emergency room. However, you should seek immediate medical attention if there is:

  • Significant facial trauma
  • Uncontrolled bleeding
  • Severe swelling or injury unrelated to orthodontic appliances

For appliance-related concerns, your orthodontist is typically the best place to start.

Yes. Tooth pain, broken fillings, or swelling around a tooth should be evaluated by your dentist. We’ll coordinate with them to keep your orthodontic treatment moving smoothly.
