Crowding of Teeth

Patient started treatment at age 11 and wore braces for 26 months. He loves his new smile.

Open-bite: Front teeth don’t touch

Patient sucked her thumb as a young child. She started treatment at age 13. She had braces and a special appliance – called a crib – to retrain the tongue, for 28 months. Now she can bite the lettuce out of a sandwich.

Deep overbite: Lower front teeth bite into palate

This adult patient, age 25, required braces and jaw surgery to correct his severe overbite, with treatment taking two years. His problem would have been corrected without surgery if he had been treated before he was a teenager.

Missing teeth

This patient’s lateral incisors were congenitally missing. She had braces for 20 months to move the teeth into the correct position, then the missing teeth were replaced with bonded “Maryland” bridges.

Under-bite: Lower Front Teeth in Front of Upper Teeth

Patient’s under-bite was causing her jaw joint discomfort and excessive wear patterns on her teeth. After about 30 months of treatment starting at age 32, she now finds smiling and chewing much easier.

Spacing of Teeth

Patient was bothered by the spaces between his teeth. Braces closed the spaces and gave him an ideal bite in 24 months. Special glued-in retainers help keep the spaces closed.

Overbite: Protruding Front Teeth

At age 10, patient had a big overbite with the top teeth protruding beyond the bottom. She had two phases of treatment. The first helped her jaws to grow more harmoniously and the second aligned her teeth and bite. At age 13, she was proudly displaying her new smile.

Non-braces Treatment

Sometimes braces are not needed to get noticeable improvements in tooth alignment. This patient was first seen at age seven for crowding of the lower permanent teeth. A procedure was performed to reduce the width of the adjacent baby teeth and the permanent incisors aligned on their own in nine months.

Phase I

Patient’s parents were concerned about both aesthetics and the health of the erupting permanent teeth when they brought him to the orthodontist at age eight. The lower front teeth were crowded and they touched the palate, and the upper front teeth were extremely displaced from their normal positions. After 12 months of Phase I treatment with an expander and partial braces, patient’s appearance and dental function was vastly improved.

Excellence has evolved.

The self-ligating evolution continues with Gemini SL braces by 3M, the leader in dental and medical technology. Gemini SL braces are an enhanced, patient-friendly, and complete self-ligating braces system.

Gemini Self-Ligating Braces are the modern choice in orthodontics. The special, customized self-ligating brackets are computer designed using a unique nickel-titanium metal alloy, giving you a beautiful smile with more comfort and in less time than with traditional metal braces.

What makes Gemini SL Brarces a Smart Choice for my Orthodontic Treatment?

  • Surprisingly Comfortable – Self-Ligating Brackets are customized to fit your teeth and your smile.
  • Gemini braces do not require the use of rubber bands (or ligatures) to help support tooth movement, which means more comfort, fewer office checkups, and more time enjoying your new, beautiful smile!
  • Conveniently Versatile – Whether you need a full set of braces, or just a few braces to correct a minor problem, Gemini brackets can help straighten out your smile!
  • Aesthetically Pleasing – Gemini brackets can be easily combined with Clarity SL Self-Ligating brackets for a “clearly” aesthetic way to wear braces.
  • Hygienically Simple – With Gemini brackets, you can forget about the dis-coloration and staining of elastic bands that may call attention to your teeth.
  • With Smart Gemini SL brackets, there are no elastic bands to trap food, and they are extremely easy to keep clean with brushing and flossing.

We are a certified Invisalign® provider

Consider Invisalign treatment to get the beautiful straight teeth you’ve always wanted — without braces. A complimentary consultation with Dr. Gen can determine if Invisalign clear aligners are right for you. We have been a certified Invisalign® provider since 2000, so your smile is in excellent hands!

What is Invisalign®?

Invisalign treatment uses a series of virtually invisible, removable, and comfortable aligners that allow you to smile more during treatment as well as after. Invisalign clear aligners are made with 3D computer imaging technology and has been proven effective. More than 70% of orthodontists in the US and Canada are certified to administer Invisalign treatment.

Why would I want it?

Not only are the aligners virtually invisible, they are removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment. Plus, brushing and flossing are no problem. They are also more comfortable than traditional braces, with no metal or wires, which also usually means you spend less time in your doctor’s office getting adjustments. Invisalign treatment also allows you to view your own virtual treatment plan when you start so you can see how your straight teeth will look when your treatment is complete.

How does it work?

You wear each set of aligners for about two weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move — little by little, week by week — until they have straightened to their final positions. You’ll visit us about once every eight to twelve weeks to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned. Total treatment time averages 12 to 15 months and the average number of aligners worn during treatment is between 18 and 30, but both will vary from case to case. Either way, it means less time away from work or school!

Faster and more precise than conventional braces.

SureSmile is an advanced orthodontic system that helps make straightening teeth significantly more precise than every before! It is much more accurate than traditional orthodontic treatments and is changing how people feel about braces. SureSmile is unlike conventional orthodontic treatments in that it starts with a 3D computer generated model of your teeth. This allows Dr. Gen to plan movements for each tooth individually throughout your entire experience wearing braces. After the 3D model is complete, SureSmile robots customize individual braces to fit your treatment plan.

As part of this commitment, we offer a fast treatment option where we can straighten your teeth in as little as 3 to 8 months. It’s known as Wilckodontics® and has been used to great success for patients around the world.

What is Wilckodontics?
Wilckodontics®, also known as Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics™ (AOO™) or Surgically Facilitated Orthodontic Treatment (SFOT), is a unique orthodontic procedure which speeds up the movement of your teeth. This means you don’t have to wear your appliance for 24 – 30 months to achieve the smile you’re after. Most cases are completed in under 8 months!

Wilckodontics® is a revolutionary procedure that resulted from extensive research in bone physiology. It involves a minor gum surgical procedure and harnesses body’s natural healing abilities to allow teeth to move significantly faster, safer, and to a greater extent than conventional orthodontics.

What are the benefits of Wilckodontics?
Wilckodontics® has been around for over 20 years and is becoming increasingly popular all over the world due to its incredible benefits. Not only it significantly reduces treatment time, but it allows for the correction of significant bite problems that are normally difficult or impossible to correct with traditional methods. Another huge benefit of Wilckodontics® is that results in a stronger and healthier bone that supports the teeth.

  • Here’s the proven list of benefits:
  • Shorter treatment time, which means more satisfied patients
  • Fewer risks (such as decay, white marks, root resorption)
  • Excellent results, in many cases not possible with conventional methods
  • In many cases eliminates need to remove healthy teeth and avoid more extensive jaw surgery
  • Thicker and healthier bone around teeth
  • Suitable to treat a range of major and minor cases in adults and teens
  • Long lasting smiles

Suitability of Wilckodontics®
Wilckodontics® can be used to treat a range of major and minor orthodontic problems among our clients. These problems include common issues, such as severe crowding, narrow dental arches, adult teeth that have failed to come through the gums, overbites, open bites, and ‘bucked teeth’.

This fast treatment option is ideally suited for teens who don’t want to spend all their high school years wearing braces, and adults, who may not want to wear an orthodontic appliance for any length of time while working professionally!

Temporomandibular Disorder

Millions of Americans suffer from chronic facial and neck pain as well as severe, recurring headaches. In some cases, this pain is due to Temporomandibular Disorder, also known as TMD.

Your temporomandibular joints, or TMJs, connect your lower jawbone to your skull. These joints get a lot of use throughout the day as you speak, chew, swallow, and yawn. If you grind or clench your teeth, your jaw muscles are working harder than they can handle. This “overuse” results in pain within and around the joints, jaw muscles and may even restrict movement. It may also result in frequent headaches, migraines and neck pain.

Symptoms of TMD include:

  • Pain in the jaw area
  • Pain, ringing, or stuffiness in the ears
  • Frequent headaches or neck aches
  • Clicking or popping sound when the jaw moves
  • Muscle spasms in the jaw area
  • A change in the alignment of top and bottom teeth
  • Locked jaw or limited opening of the mouth
  • Headaches
  • Migraines

If you notice that you are experiencing any of these symptoms, let Dr. Gen know at your next appointment. He can help determine if you have TMD and create a customized treatment plan to help relieve your symptoms.

Not all jaw pain is associated with TMD

If you feel that you might have TMD, it is always important to see your dentist and receive an exam. However, not all jaw pain is associated with TMD, and if you do not have TMD there are many different preventive steps you can take to maintain a healthy, strong smile.

  • Relax your face — “Lips together, teeth apart”
  • Avoid grinding your teeth
  • Avoid all gum chewing
  • Don’t cradle the phone receiver between your head and shoulder — either use a headset or hold the receiver to your ear
  • Chew food evenly on both sides of your mouth
  • Do not sit with your chin rested on your hand
  • Practice good posture — keep your head up, back straight, and shoulders squared

Many people get TMD without ever having braces. Symptoms usually wax and wane regardless of whether braces are worn. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed above and are concerned that you’re a candidate for TMD treatment, please contact our office for a consultation.

Surgical orthodontics is a combined treatment by an orthodontist and an oral surgeon to correct jaw-size discrepancies.  These discrepancies usually include severe malocclusion or bad bites, and jaw-size abnormalities in non-growing adults. Surgical orthodontics is usually a great option when improvement of facial profile or facial esthetics is desired, but not possible through orthodontics alone.  It’s also beneficial for adults with sleep apnea and may produce a more significant long-term improvement and eliminate or minimize the need for CPAP machine.

The orthodontist initially places braces and aligns the teeth within the jawbone; then the oral surgeon positions the jaws into an ideal position to allow the bite to come together and to achieve the best facial and esthetic balance.

Dr. Gen will work with an oral surgeon to ensure that if you need surgical orthodontics, you will receive the best care possible.
